Chicago resident Sohrab Tebyanian has operated the iconic outerwear and accessories store, Andriana Furs for more than three decades. Beyond his work in fashion, Sohrab Tebyanian has an avid interest in gardening and often plants vegetables, such as cucumbers, peppers, and tomatoes in his home garden.
Tomato plants do well in warm weather and can produce fruit in less than two months after being planted from seed. However, seedlings can be fragile and must be protected from frost. Gardeners should treat soil with compost or lime to ensure it is the right pH level for the tomato transplants.
Some tomato varieties such as heirlooms, grow like a vine and will require stakes or trellises to support them. A special frame known as a tomato cage is better suited for Roma or Amelia tomatoes, which grow compactly. Since tomatoes are susceptible to pests such as aphids, co-planting with fragrant herbs like basil will help keep insects away.
