The Blackhawks bolstered their forward depth on October 12 by signing free agent center Mattias Janmark to a 1-year, $2.25 million contract. Chicago’s prior offseason moves, which included not re-signing goaltender Corey Crawford and trading Brandon Saad, were criticized by Jonathan Toews, who felt upset that management didn’t share the team’s plans to rebuild with the team’s core players. Janmark, however, is a 27-year-old who has played nearly 300 games in the NHL.

Selected by the Detroit Red Wings in the third round of the 2013 NHL Draft, Janmark made his NHL debut with the Dallas Stars in the 2015-16 season. He recorded 29 points in 73 games as a rookie and improved upon that the following season with 34 points in 81 games. He recorded 21 points in 62 games this past season, as well as eight points in 26 playoff games.
